Selected Professional Experience:

2009-Present   CARES – Community Assessment of Renewable Energy and Sustainability

Co-founder and architecture director.

  • Working with Native American communities in Northern California on the design and construction of sustainable, culturally-sensitive buildings and supporting systems.
  • Initiating and organizing ParticiPlace2012—International design competition for the PPN’s Living Culture Center, as a research test-bed: Creating the competition brief and building program as a participatory community-based process; Obtaining $11,000 for prizes; Advertising the competition around the world; Engaging acclaimed professional and acclaimed tribal jury;   Designing printed material with a professional graphic designer; Announcing the competition internationally; Receiving 17 submissions from 10 different countries; Coordinating the evaluations process; Organizing the award ceremony and certificates; Preparing a final portfolio of all submissions. 
  • Managing and working with a team of 3 architecture graduates on the design of 2 HUD-funded sustainable and culturally sensitive prototype homes for the PPN in Ukiah, California: Organizing community workshops and design charrettes for the home design and for selecting materials and sustainable systems; Preparing conceptual design drawings and mock-ups; Working with construction and engineering company in transferring our design to construction documents; Participating in the construction of the straw-bale and earth plaster homes as a volunteer- and community-based process.
  • Advising, mentoring, and evaluating groups of undergraduate and graduate students from UC Berkeley’s School of Engineering and undergraduate students from University of San-Francisco’s department of Art and Architecture in their community engaged learning process with the Pinoleville Pomo Nation (PPN) on a variety of class projects such as: Head-start preschool building, sustainable and culturally appropriate shading devices, and zero-energy museum-grade display box.

Director, Cal Design Lab, College of Environmental Design.

  • The CDL is an experimental studio space promoting hands-on, interdisciplinary design activities as a nexus for design research and practice, facilitating discourse that transcends different design disciplines.
  • Managing the lab and its activities including organizing public design workshops, international conference, making the lab and its resources available to relevant academic courses as well as students’ groups with a design-oriented social mission such as Design for America, Global Architecture Brigades.

  • Participating in the construction of a private house built over a year.

2001-2003       The Environmental Simulation Laboratory (ESLab), Porter School for Environmental Studies, Tel-Aviv University, Israel.

  • Research assistant. Responsible for the design and creation of a 3D computerized model of Tel-Aviv city and the suburbs, and use it as the base for 3D Schematic Models of Urban Regions and Urban Development used in different research-project.

2000-2001       The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI).

  • Environmental Proficiency Program: sponsoring one student chosen from each major university in Israel, for 1 year, combining theoretical discussions and lectures as well as practical work on an project.

  • Professor Rivka Oxman: Development of a case-based reasoning system. Analyzing different architectural precedents, categorizing them and their characteristics. Adding the precedents, testing the system and maintaining it.
